Bug 74383 – subversion does not accept certificates from servers if certificate has unicode

Using subversion 1.0.8. If I try to 'co' a repository from a server whose certificate has unicode somewhere in it (like in location, name of issuer, etc) subversion will fail but will not give a useful error message. The message given is simply:

svn: PROPFIND request failed on '/repos/trunk'
svn: PROPFIND of '/repos/trunk': Server certificate verification failed: issuer is not trusted 

Using subversion 1.0.5 from a SUSE machine, however, works. This leads me to believe that it's a configuration problem in the subversion ebuild.

Does  this also happen with the 1.1.1 version?

No response from reporter, additionally this version is no longer in portage.
