the USE flag howto lists a bunch of flags, perhaps current, perhaps outdated, but since it /doesn't/ refer us to the actual source-description-list, it has to always be updated /after/ the use.desc file is upated, and that isn't going to happen instantly. I couldn't figure out what the correct flags were for my system, and ended up having to build everything from scratch several times ( partly because my CFLAGS update was being overwritten with 'emerge sync ; emerge rsync' before bootstrap ). Please /always/ give us the link to the actual, always-current list, in the howto pages. THANK YOU for Gentoo, eh?
