I have Windows XP installed on a virtual machine, and I like to set my Master and PCM volume to 100% and not having mess with it afterwards. But when the virtual machine starts, it automatically changes Master and PCM volume, and I have to manually readjust to my liking. 
Even when I set all the volume levels to 100% on the VM, the host changes to a much lower volume. (100% for alsa and for windows are very different)
I think it is a more sensitive approach to have the guest not being able to change the host volume by default.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Set PCM and Master to 100%
1.1 amixer set Master 100 unmute
1.2 amixer set PCM 100 unmute
2.Run a Windows VMWare guest
3.run 'amixer' and check that Master and PCM volumes are lower.

Actual Results:  
Master and PCm volumes are lower 

Expected Results:  
keep the Host configuration 'as-is'

A partial solution for the Master volume is to add this to the virtual machine config:
pciSound.enableVolumeControl = "FALSE" 
We need to change the .vmx file by hand, though. 
PCM volume was still lowered to 39%.

This is totally a VMWare issue with their software.  Take it up with them, honestly.
