and hal is actually running ? Yep , it is. I have not touched hal config after the emerge , could it be that hal is missconfigured or something ? Ivan Yosifov. hmmm my initial guess was that it maybe a problem with your hardware somehow, giving back the wrong info about whats in the drive. Could you check what it sais on the different media properties for your particular drive ? use the hal-device-manager pack, the storage.cdrom.* properties are probably the ones you want to check out. I have storage.cdrom.cdr = 1 storage.cdrom.cdrw = 1 storage.cdrom.dvd* = 0 (the cdrom has no dvd support) storage.cdrom.read_speed = 9172 storage.cdrom.support_media_changed = 1 storage.cdrom.write_speed = 2116 The cd model is LG GCE-8525B (http://www.lge.com/catalog/prodmodeldetail?actType=search&page=1&modelCategoryId=CTG1000502&categoryId=CTG1000500&parentId=CTG1000439&modelPrefix=40CWDA&globalCode=GCE-8525B&globalSuffix=000000&model=0) ,in case it matters. The mentioned properties appear to be static - they dont change if I change media in the cd (rw or not , blank or not). Not sure if this is normal. Another thing - I have set in Apps->Desktop Prefs->Removable Storage "Mount removable media when inserted" , yet when I insert a cd , I have to mount it manually - it does not automount. A third thing - in computer:/// I have 2 cdrom icons: "CD-ROM" and "CD-RW Drive". Yet I have only one physical cdrom. Not sure if this is normal , too. Ivan Yosifov. hmm wrong bunch of properties, check the properties of the actual media & look for the volume.disc.* set. The volume.disc.* set appears only after mounting the cd. I insert the cd , mount it , and in the hal-dev-manager under Computer->IDE device(master)-><CDROM MODEL> a new node appears "k3b data project" (the cd was recorded with k3b). The propertis are: volume.disc.has_audio = 0 volume.disc.has_data = 1 volume.disc.is_appendable = 0 volume.disc.is_blank = 0 volume.disc.is_rewritable = 1 volume.disc.type = "cd_rw" When I try to start burning , the cdrom is unmounted (naturally) and the "k3b data project" dissapears. Should hal provide this information when the cdrom is not mounted ? Ivan Yosifov. Hello , A BIOS tweak fixed the problem.
