Given that config.log simply says that pkg-config has failed to detect xft, this doesn't seem to in any way a problem with x11-wm/sawfish, unless pango got built without X useflag, when it would become a dependency problem (sawfish would need an explicit libXft dep; though it would be a bit weird). Well, on one hand, it's possible, as for most cases fontconfig pango module would suffice, yet...
