The current VTK in portage is 8.2.0, which is one-and-a-half years old. The current version as per upstream is 9.0.1 — this is also needed by higher level packages such as ANTs and ITK.

I have tried bumping it myself, but I wasn't able to get the patches up to date (none of them apply as-is to the new code), though at least some are still required, since otherwise the “Gentoo” build type is not available.
