/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask says:

# I think this is only for php 5 anyway

Since php5 is now marked ~x86 and pretty usable, this package should be unmasked too (~x86 or even x86). I unmasked it and it installs/runs just fine. When using php5, this version is mandatory, lower versions don't seem to work.

I do not understand why this package is hardmasked. It is the current UPSTREAM version for the use with PHP 5 and installs and seems to works fine for me.

I removed it from package.mask.
