Bug 726076 – media-sound/umix-1.0.2-r1: USE=ncurses Can't init mixer nor ncurses

Installed with USE=ncurses. When runing without options, its output:
umix: Failed initializing mixer devices
umix: Ncurses UI initialization failed, try `umix -q'

With -q only complains about devs (no UI used).

Everything else with ncurses and/or alsa/pulse support works fine (e.g. alsamixer, pnmixer, volumeicon).

Reproducible: Always

I guess it is not compatible with ncurses 6.x (perhaps not even 5.x).
Upstream seems to be dead since many years.
Has there been a form which is supported?
