The latest snapshots at:

are from January. Is this server still among the active servers? It is still listed here:

https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/mirrors/#US

I was surprised I had to sync portage a second time with another server to receive any updates.

Someone got around to updating the mirror list. This is no longer a mirror anymore.
