I filed https://sourceforge.net/p/gtkpod/bugs/332/ but a response from the main developer (https://sourceforge.net/p/gtkpod/mailman/message/37007992/) says it's pretty much abandonware, unless someone wants to take over maintenance. Do you still use this program? We have no maintainer for this package at the moment. It seems to me that this package is dead. http://www.gtkpod.org/ is broken too. Ideally someone would fork it and fixes bugs. Then it makes sense to keep it in the tree. I use it, but very infrequently, so while I prefer to see it continue, I won't be heartbroken if it gets tree-cleaned. Only the landing page of the website is dead - if you find a link to anywhere deeper on the site, it works fine. The ex-developer seems at least to be responsive to emails to their list - so I'll ask about fixing the web site. If someone wants to take over, I believe the site owner is likely to turn it over, rather than requiring a fork. Right now, it still works with gcc-9. Looking at the mailing list archives, there have been occasional posts in the past few years, so I suspect it probably does have at least a small user base, if that makes any difference. I think the previous maintainer is willing to hand it over to anyone interested, but that's for the sourceforge site. I have not yet contacted the web site owner. However, it seems that the usefulness of this package is pretty low, as it only works for older iPods, not any more recent models (https://sourceforge.net/p/gtkpod/mailman/gtkpod-devel/). I've tried fixing the gcc-10 issue myself, but adding "extern" to the declarations for the two multiply defined items works for one, but not the other - as it is defined only as a pointer, not the actual structure, and I haven't figured out how to do the actual definition correctly. I'm now wondering if this should simply start on the slow road to being tree-cleaned. There are no security bugs and no new versions, but it's unclear if it has many users or not. At least in Fedora it's still maintained (in Debian too I think). We could then get fixes from them when needed. For this concrete issue I think they are simply forcing -fcommon In ArchLinux bugs I have seen some people were considering to fork it... but for now... I would simply apply -fcommon and follow a bit the fixes from other distributions As far as I remember, there is no alternative for iPod users apart of installing iTunes in Windows, no? :/ I believe you are right about the lack of alternatives, especially for older devices. I suppose -fcommon is at least a short-term workaround, pending a real solution. It's only a guess, but I think someone who knows C better than I do could probably figure out how to fix this fairly easily. Per my notes in Comment #4, I think the actual structure is created dynamically, and the problem is that the compiler complains about the definition of the global pointer to it because it doesn't know how large is the structure it's pointing to. That doesn't quite make sense to me, either, but at least it's a small program, so repeated attempts at compiling don't take very long. The bug has been closed via the following commit(s): https://gitweb.gentoo.org/repo/gentoo.git/commit/?id=fe19af9ee59c4326bbffe90d6fcfd11d554e1aca commit fe19af9ee59c4326bbffe90d6fcfd11d554e1aca Author: Pacho Ramos <pacho@gentoo.org> AuthorDate: 2020-07-21 18:27:53 +0000 Commit: Pacho Ramos <pacho@gentoo.org> CommitDate: 2020-07-21 18:29:02 +0000 app-pda/gtkpod: Workaround gcc-10 build issues Also pull gstreamer at build time as needed to provide m4 file used for eautoreconf. Also port to eapi7, drop python script that, even if can be ported to python3, doesn't work on Gentoo as we don't have needed dependencies Closes: https://bugs.gentoo.org/722504 Bug: https://bugs.gentoo.org/659748 Package-Manager: Portage-3.0.0, Repoman-2.3.23 Signed-off-by: Pacho Ramos <pacho@gentoo.org> app-pda/gtkpod/gtkpod-2.1.5-r1.ebuild | 121 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 1 file changed, 121 insertions(+) |
