The Xorg.0.log file from the system
It is sad to read that you have problems with the software. The situation seems to be a bit more complicate and requires some analysis. We can not help you efficiently via bug tracker. The bug tracker aims rather on specific problems in .ebuilds and less on individual systems. I have had very good experience on the gentoo IRC [1] with questions like this. Of course there are also forums and mailing lists [2,3]. I hope you understand, that I will close the bug here therefore and wish you good luck on one of the mentioned channels [4]. Please reopen the ticket in order to provide an indication for an specific error in an ebuild or any gentoo related product. [1] https://www.gentoo.org/get-involved/irc-channels/ (especially #gentoo-powerpc) [2] https://forums.gentoo.org/ [3] https://www.gentoo.org/get-involved/mailing-lists/all-lists.html [4] https://www.gentoo.org/support/ Hi! No problem, I completely understand, I'll go and head to the IRC, thanks! I do want to write back though that in interim after doing some experimenting around with the firmware and different kernels and different graphics cards, I was able to "fix" the problem by downgrading to a 5.4.38 LTS kernel. That seems to have solved the issue, at least using older firmware. Thank you! |
Created attachment 637828 [details] dmesg from the stricken system Ahoy! I'm getting a mysterious bug that might be related to amdgpu and Xorg, which causes xfce4 to suddenly stop working at random intervals. In a nutshell, this is what seems to happen: 1) The mouse continues working, but clicking, alt-tabbing, or keystrokes are ignored. I can still move around the mouse as normal, and audio (played via alsa, I do not have pulseaudio) continues to play as normal. This state lasts for around five, maybe six seconds. 2) Suddenly, all of the screens suddenly turn a bizarre colour mess of strange colours. It almost looks like one of those psychdelic patterns except digitized, and sometimes I can make out where the windows and text used to be on the screen. Audio continues to play normally, unaffected, even. 3) I can access the machine via ssh and take a dmesg or retrieve my Xorg.0.log. The machine accesses normally. Interestingly enough, I can't seem to find a process to kill xfce4, and I haven't been able to escape to the terminal with CTRL ALT F1, it's frozen. But I can reach it over SSH, even as the affected user, and get a bash shell. Reproducing the bug: The steps to reproduce this bug are that I just need to turn on my computer, use it for a little bit, and usually it'll happen within a couple hours of use. Sometimes as many as five such occurrences during a single work day. Trying to work around the bug: Once the computer locks up, I can't seem to get it to unlock, even by ssh'ing in and trying to kill the X server or escaping to the terminal. However, I can ssh in and use the reboot or shutdown command to gracefully restart the system. Some remarks: I have an amd64 machine that uses a similar world file, also uses amdgpu, and it's never experienced this bug. I've only been able to reproduce it on the ppc64. So I looked through my Xorg.0.log file and saw amdgpu seems to be the last thing it talks about before reporting errors all over the place. If anyone needs more details, please let me know? I'll attach my dmesg and then I'll send a reply to post my Xorg.0.log. Thank you so much, Peter.
