Bug 72036 – Gallery 1.4 and ImageMagick 6.1.0 and later incompatible

It has come to our attention that the ImageMagick development team recently modified the commandline parameter requirements for their most recent versions. This causes ImageMagick 6.1.0+ to be incompatible with Gallery 1.x in some circumstances.

If you see errors, while using ImageMagick, that are similar to those described in this bug on SourceForge, then you will need to downgrade your version of ImageMagick to something below 6.1.0.

This error will be resolved in the upcoming 1.5 release of Gallery, and if absolutely necessary, we will release a fix for 1.4.4. There are no plans for a 1.4.4 fix at this time.

I recommend either a ebuild mask be implemented on either the incompatible or
gallery imagemagick, or solution be provided to accommodate this issue.

Alternative is to use NetPBM instead of imagemagick.

How about an einfo warning on the recent versions of imagemagick? Warning of a problem with gallery.

Upgrading imagemagick completely kills gallery.

Err when is this gonna get fixed, now openoffice-ximian is dependant on imagemagik of which gallery depends on??? I guess I'll have to switch to netpbm or something and hope that works.

Just use the older version. Any other apps should be ok with the older version.

As of the last day or so, it appears the older, working (with gallery) versions of imagemagick have been removed from the portage tree.  Now I get 


$ emerge -Dupv world

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Re-adding imagemagick 6.0.8.1 to the portage tree would resolve this.  

I would prefer to not use netpbm - from the look of the link posted by David Grant, there is no way (for quality or otherwise) I can justify that sort of load increase.

The older versions of ImageMagick were removed due a security problem.  Our security team released a GLSA covering this on Thursday.

Gallery needs updating to work with versions of ImageMagick which don't contain security bugs ... otherwise we'll be forced to drop Gallery from Portage.

This error will be resolved in the upcoming 1.5 release of Gallery. We cannot add older versions of imagemagick, because it has several vulterabilitys.

This bug can be closed. Gallery is bumped to 1.4.4-pl5 due to a security problem.
This release irons out all problems w/ imagemagick 6.1+

Agreed I think this bug can now be closed, I'm now using the current builds of both imagemagik and gallery and they seem to be working fine.
