The packages are stuck on py3.6 which means they will be pain once we switch to 3.7. Please test them on 3.7 *and* 3.8 (so we don't to revisit this in a few months), and update PYTHON_COMPAT appropriately. If it doesn't work, please either fix it, remove Python or issue last rites. Please consider this urgent.

https://github.com/openbabel/openbabel (and the python libs) are python3+ compatible now, I installed it on python3.7 and python3.8 using the following ebuilds:

https://github.com/jakeogh/jakeogh/blob/master/sci-chemistry/maeparser/maeparser-9999.ebuild

https://github.com/jakeogh/jakeogh/blob/master/sci-mathematics/coordgenlibs/coordgenlibs-9999.ebuild

https://github.com/jakeogh/jakeogh/blob/master/sci-chemistry/openbabel/openbabel-9999.ebuild

https://github.com/jakeogh/jakeogh/blob/master/sci-chemistry/openbabel-python/openbabel-python-9999.ebuild

I suspect the sci-chemistry/openbabel-python ebuild should be merged into ci-chemistry/openbabel as a USE flag since it's in the same git repo.
Comment 3 Justin Keogh 2020-08-29 19:34:22 UTC
Please ignore or fix https://github.com/jakeogh/jakeogh/blob/master/sci-chemistry/openbabel-python/openbabel-python-9999.ebuild as it's not working correctly. I'm not sure what I did wrong. This PR may be related: https://github.com/openbabel/openbabel/pull/1977

https://github.com/jakeogh/jakeogh/blob/master/sci-chemistry/openbabel/openbabel-9999.ebuild works, and installs the python bindings, but only for the current enabled python "eselect python list", so more work is needed to make it install for all PYTHON_TARGETS.
