clight[1] is self-described "a C daemon that turns your webcam into a light sensor", though it can also use ambient light sensor devices.

It has two dependencies which are not in the tree yet:
  - clightd[2], a D-Bus service to manage screen settings (brightness, gamma, etc.)
  - libmodule[3], "a small and simple C implementation of an actor library"

I already did initial packaging work in my overlay, and I'd like to send a pull request about them via GitHub as a proxied maintainer.
