Cannot reproduce this, maybe it's due to some plugin or theme? Maybe this is a mozilla bug, not gentoo related. As I mentioned, http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/alsa-guide.xml consistently crashes gecko based browsers. I notice my processor goes to 100% usage before the page loads. The page does paint after a delay, but the browser window disappears when I attempt to scroll down. It is really annoying, to say the least. That page you referenced works fine for me using Moz 1.7.5. My browsers crash when I try to get to gentoo.org or any other page that has tables or frames (maybe something else too). I recompiled firefox with debug enables and now it just hangs up instead of crashing. Oh yeah I have no problems running any other gtk program or gnome for that matter. There seems to be a problem with the use flags and the firefox ebuild. There is also a problem with the version of gtk+ used because it still uses 2.4 even though I have updated to 2.6 (this one is not through portage so it's not that surprising). As far as glibc goes it is updated through portage to 2.6.0 however I have no idea what version firefox is trying to use. Any help on how to fix the library version problems is highly appreciated. Also I think it might be a good idea to finally put all of gtk+ 2.6 in portage. Well, I found a solution and it is to use freetype bellow 2.1.9 I have 2.1.5 currently installed and all the crashes are gone. I was already running freetype-2.1.5-r1. Downgrading to 1.3.1-r4 did not fix the problem for me. :-( Downgrading freetype from 2.1.9 to 2.1.5 fixed the problem. I was able to reproduce the bug and fix it, using the above method on firefox 1.0 and 1.0-r3, but a friend of mine reports, that he has never experienced the aforementioned bug, although he uses firefox 1.0-r3 and freetype 2.1.9 I also have this problem. It happens with any gecko based browser as long as they use gtk2 (gtk1 works) - even the firefox binary packages show this problem - no matter if I use freetype 2.1.9 or 2.1.5-r1. Some URLs where it happens: http://www.bahn.de http://www.gtk.org (how ironical) I also created a new user and tested it in gnome and fluxbox with the default themes etc. It always crashes as described above. Just tried USE="-gtk2 -gnome" emerge mozilla mozilla-firefox. Built fine and appears to use Motif widgets. Still crashes as before, so my bug must not be GTK-related? I think mozilla-* uses gtk+-1.2 with your USE-flags - not motif. But it works for me with gtk+-1.2 (at least the old mozilla) Ok, gtk is not the problem. Building again with: USE="-truetype debug" emerge mozilla-firefox produces a binary that actually works. Yeah! At least I *hope* it isn't the debug flag that made it work. Looks like the comment about freetype may be close to the target. So I've lost anti-aliased fonts in mozilla, right? Well, I can live with that if my browser will stop crashing. building firefox with "USE="-truetype debug" emerge mozilla-firefox" still does not fix this problem for me. I've tried it with all available freetypes and still to no effect. Crashing regularly on any page with flash, and anything with any kind of complicated javascript. Same error as everyone else here. I have now fixed the problem. I recently had installed several hundred TTF fonts before this problem started happening.
