when the localversion is set in the kernel, uname -r shows the kernel name with the new string but the /lib/modules/`uname -r`/ directory isnt created, rendering externally built modules useless. (using gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r4)

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. build kernel with the string
2. reboot
3. modprobe a module (ie. ipw2200)
