here it hangs for at least 15 mins until I hit ctrl-c

It's not only me, quite a few users reported that in #gentoo,but as usual don't file bugs. :(

When reproducing the issue, please post 'ps wax -H' WHILE the
script is sitting "locked".

nuking... roger, reopen if people still are hitting it.
Offhand, the script hasn't changed, I just suspect the users were having local issues...
