hmm, I can't reproduce this with gnome-applets-2.8 check if it installed the proper image files in the right location: joem@triforce ~ % qpkg -l gnome-applets |grep pixmaps/stickynotes /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/stickynotes.png /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/stickynotes_prelight.png /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/locked.png /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/unlocked.png /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/close.png /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/resize_se.png /usr/share/pixmaps/stickynotes/resize_sw.png Yes, all files in place. I have noticed that it (and the fish applet I tried) are in an infinite loop when added to the panel, using all the CPU. This was noted by a 2.8.0 user in http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=251458 Perhaps it is something outside of gnome-applets, and more in the gnome-panel or control-center packages. Should also note that I am using Xorg, other user doesn't mention. Is anything spilled out onto your console when you try to add the applets? Try opening up a terminal, and /usr/libexec/stickynotes_applet Then add the stickynotes to your panel (or try to), and see if you get any information. I ran /usr/libexec/stickynotes_applet in a terminal and attempted to add the icon to the panel. no icon appears, no message dumped to the terminal, but on the add attempt the CPU usage of sticky notes goes to 95%. on the scond add attempt I get the 'blank icon space ' on the panel and the not-usable app window. When I kill the stickynotes_applet, I get (two, after two add attempts) the "applet appears to have died unexpectedly" requester. No new messages in .gnomerc-errors. This and several other problems appeared after my 'emerge -uD world' of 15 Nov. I had not done an emerge since 30 or 31 Oct, but was using xorg/gnome successfully up to 15 Nov. Also for and since 15 Nov I set GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo ftp://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/pub/linux/gentoo" I have 'emerge -uD world'd again on 22 Nov., which included a new xorg build, and I have re-emerged all gnome-applets dependencies, with no effect. I have generated the following list of problems, of which I believe all but the 'help button' issue appeared together (don't know about the 'drawer' item, haven't used it). System monitor does work in the panel, just starts out tiny. I do not have 'composite' in the extensions section of my xorg.conf, however I set 'option composite disable' under the nv device because it is reported as default enabled in the xorg log file (but I bet this is something different). I am running xdm, but made no difference when I switched to gdm. begin-list: xscreensaver daemon does not start (have to go to Desktop prefes / advanced / screensaver so it will notice; yes, "Automatically save changes to session" is set) most help buttons result in a requester that says: "The specified location is invalid.", and (gnome-search-tool:28239): libgnomevfs-WARNING **: Cannot load module `/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libvfs-help.so' (/usr/lib/gnome-vfs-2.0/modules/libvfs-help.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory) appears in .gnomerc-errors control panel problems: - custom app launcher does not work if "run in terminal" checked - drawer opens at icon 1st time, then on left corner afterwards - fish applet runs (in ps) but no icon or other noticeable result; sucks cpu - Run Application: -- while typing in window, errors appear in .gnomerc-errors: (gnome-panel:20467): GLib-GObject-WARNING **: invalid uninstantiatable type `(null)' in cast to `GtkLabel' (gnome-panel:20467): Gtk-CRITICAL **: file gtklabel.c: line 946 (gtk_label_set_text): assertion `GTK_IS_LABEL (label)' failed -- when "run in terminal" selected, nothing happens and .gnomerc-errors gets: Invalid argument: "/bin/bash" - stickynotes runs (in ps) but no icon or other result, sucks cpu. on second addition to panel, there is a blank space added, tooltip drops down but is blank; same for "panel menu" on this icon. On click, note appears but no close or other buttons, can't type into it. [while I'm moaning, "delete panel" should have a confirmation dialog, and/or the menu entry should not be immediately adacent to "add to panel" (I know, upstream gnome, but guess what happened to me while doing this testing...)] end-list sorry for the text dump, but hoping one of the items might trigger some indication of what the underlying problem is. problems solved. These and bug 71505 all occur as a result of having export LANG=en_GB in .bashrc. see thread at http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=229861 that is still a bug, it shouldn't matter what your locale is set to. I was thinking maybe #72416 could be related, could you check if the patched gconf ebuild has any effect for you ? *** Bug 71505 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. *** yes, with gnome-base/gconf-2.8.1-r1 all problems listed above have disappeared and I have $LANG = en_GB again. Thanks for the follow-up! cool thnx, duping it there *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 72416 *** |
