The file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf (which is installed from /usr/portage/media-sound/alsa-utils/files/alsa-modules.conf-rc) contains the following comment:

## IMPORTANT:
## You need to customise this section for your specific sound card(s)
## and then run `update-modules' command.

As far as I understand, update-modules no longer exists, and it is no longer necessary to run any commands after editing the file.

    media-sound/alsa-utils: Stop providing obsolete modprobe.d file
    
    The file only contains obsolete entries that are not needed with current
    systems. If some lines need to be added to workaround other issues, please
    open a bug report per issue to properly track them in the future.
    
    Also drop unneeded .la files.
