Description Bob 2004-11-12 14:18:32 UTC
the current version of Xorg-x11 causes video crashes on the Intel i810 chipset. At random periods of time following boot, the video display will scramble into a series of colored vertical lines, locking up the system requiring a hard reboot.

this problem has been reported by multiple people on the gentoo website, and coincidentally they both had the same Dell PC (redhat certified) using the same i810 chipset.

Now here is the interesting part -- its not heat related. it NEVER happens in windows, but i have tried a number of linux distros -- it happens in Mandrake 10.0, SuSE 9.1 Pro, and Gentoo. It appears to be related to X and not related to the distros, as rolling back to xorg-x11-6.7.0-r2 cures the problem.

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. load current version of X11 (Gentoo, Suse 9.1 or Mandrake 10.0)
2. boot the system
3. watch the screen freeze-up

Actual Results:
video lockups

Expected Results:
functional X window system

i apologize if this is not the right forum to post this bug report. i'm hoping
that you can kick it up to the people at X.

on my Compaq Deskpro w/i810 lockup doesn't occur but after a while X crashes with the error 'Active ring not flushed'. I guess the driver for the i810 in the xorg 6.8.0 is erm... FUBAR as there are a few similar bug reports found in google.

Rafal, see https://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1794.

B. Predaina, see http://freedesktop.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1817.

I'm closing this as upstream. If there's a fix committed upstream, feel free to reopen so I can add it.
Comment 3 Joshua Baergen (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2005-11-20 12:30:14 UTC
B. Predaina's problem should be fixed in all current X versions.

Marking fixed.
