Bug 70956

Summary: QA notice in x11-libs/vte - is this a problem?
Product: Gentoo Linux Reporter: John Robinson <john.robinson+bug.gentoo.org>
Component: [OLD] GNOMEAssignee: Gentoo Linux Gnome Desktop Team <gnome>
Status: RESOLVED DUPLICATE
Severity: normal
Priority: Lowest
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: Linux

Package list:
Runtime testing required: ---

Description John Robinson 2004-11-12 05:12:36 UTC
`emerge =x11-libs/vte-0.11.11-r1` produces a slightly worrying notice during the install phase:

strip:
   usr/bin/vte
   usr/lib/vte/iso8859mode
   usr/lib/vte/slowcat
   usr/lib/vte/nativeecho
   usr/lib/vte/vterdb
   usr/lib/vte/utf8echo
   usr/lib/vte/utf8mode
   usr/lib/vte/interpret
   usr/lib/libvte.so.4.4.0
   usr/lib/python2.3/site-packages/gtk-2.0/vtemodule.so
   usr/libexec/gnome-pty-helper
making executable: /usr/lib/libvte.so.4.4.0
QA Notice: /usr/libexec/gnome-pty-helper is setXid, dynamically linked and using lazy bindings.
This combination is generally discouraged. Try: LDFLAGS='-Wl,-z,now' emerge vte
>>> Completed installing into /var/tmp/portage/vte-0.11.11-r1/image/

It's slightly worrying to me because I've no idea what it means, but does this matter? I wouldn't know what those LDFLAGS would do...

Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.
2.
3.

Comment 1 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-11-12 05:51:16 UTC
yeah thats why such messages shouldn't be in portage, because without much reason it worries ppl who don't know what it means in the first place.
Comment 2 John Robinson 2004-11-12 06:03:58 UTC
Well, rather than portage not trying to spot potential issues, maybe ebuilds ought to be able to suppress the messages when these things are definitely not a problem.
Comment 3 SpanKY gentoo-dev 2004-11-15 23:22:58 UTC
with set*id apps, the idea is that none of them fall under the 'def not a problem' category
