gdal-2.4.1-r2 doesn't build due to

/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/9.2.0/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: //usr/lib/libxml2.so: error adding symbols: file in wrong format

collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status
make[1]: *** [GNUmakefile:66: libgdal.la] Error 1

Why does it try to link /usr/lib/libxml2.so when the right library is in
/usr/lib64/libxml2.so

(I am using the 17.1/desktop profile)
