build log

udev-242 link fails with this error
/usr/lib/gcc/x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/8.3.0/../../../../x86_64-pc-linux-gnu/bin/ld: /usr/lib/libcap.so: error adding symbols: file in wrong format
collect2: error: ld returned 1 exit status

I rebuilt sys-libs/libcap-2.26-r2 without issue, but the undev link still fails.

   Since Gentoo has critical dynamic libraries in /lib, and the static versions
   in /usr/lib, we need to have a "fake" dynamic lib in /usr/lib, otherwise we
   run into linking problems. This "fake" dynamic lib is a linker script that
   redirects the linker to the real lib. And yes, this works in the cross-
   compiling scenario as the sysroot-ed linker will prepend the real path.

   See bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/4411 for more info.

Comment 2 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2019-08-04 17:53:52 UTC
You probably have a bad libdir value in /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/libcap.pc. Please rebuild sys-libs/libcap.
Comment 3 Daiajo Tibdixious 2019-08-04 22:36:28 UTC
I already rebuilt libcap (as I mentioned in the initial description).

# cat /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/libcap.pc
prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=
libdir=/usr/lib64
includedir=/usr/include

Name: libcap
Description: libcap
Version: 2.26
Libs: -L${libdir} -lcap
Libs.private:
Cflags: -I${includedir}

# cat /usr/lib/pkgconfig/libcap.pc
prefix=/usr
exec_prefix=
libdir=/usr/lib
includedir=/usr/include

Name: libcap
Description: libcap
Version: 2.26
Libs: -L${libdir} -lcap
Libs.private:
Cflags: -I${includedir}

# ls /usr/*/libcap.so*
/usr/lib64/libcap.so  /usr/lib/libcap.so  /usr/lib/libcap.so.2  /usr/lib/libcap.so.2.26
# ls /lib*/libcap.so*
/lib64/libcap.so.2  /lib64/libcap.so.2.26
# file /lib*/libcap.so*
/lib64/libcap.so.2:    symbolic link to libcap.so.2.26
/lib64/libcap.so.2.26: ELF 64-bit LSB shared object, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, stripped

It seems that the 64bit libcap is in /lib64, whereas the pc file has it in /usr/lib64, where that libcap.so is a text file redirector to /lib64.
Comment 4 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2019-08-05 00:10:05 UTC
What does this output on your system?

pkg-config --libs libcap
Comment 5 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2019-08-05 00:17:01 UTC
Actually this might be more useful:

PKG_CONFIG_ALLOW_SYSTEM_LIBS=1 pkg-config --libs libcap
Comment 6 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2019-08-05 01:36:25 UTC
Just to share my thoughts:

This does not appear to be a common problem, or more people would be reporting it.

I suspect there is something special about your system that causes pkg-config to return the wrong libdir, or meson to misinterpret the libdir, or something like that.

I doubt we are going to be able to figure out what is different about your system by sending comments back-and-forth on bugzilla. It will likely require some greater research on your part.

If you would like to ping me on Freenode (IRC) for an interactive troubleshooting session, I would not mind.
Comment 7 Daiajo Tibdixious 2019-08-05 04:06:18 UTC
# PKG_CONFIG_ALLOW_SYSTEM_LIBS=1 pkg-config --libs libcap
-L/usr/lib64 -lcap

I was about to log a problem with chromium not building now.
/usr/include/glib-2.0/glib/gmacros.h:181:29: error: size of array _GStaticAssertCompileTimeAssertion_1 is negative
Upgraded it just a few days ago with no issues.

So I have pango fails with a configure problem https://www.bugs.gentoo.org/690742
and this one. All suggesting a fundamental problem but I can't see the connection.

I have not used freenode irc before, I connected to #mikegilbert
Comment 9 Mike Gilbert gentoo-dev 2019-08-05 14:14:40 UTC
Sorry, I should have mentioned the #gentoo support channel.
