gcc-config: error: could not run/locate 'i686-pc-linux-gnu-cpp'

Have you recently transitioned to the 17.1 profile? Did you reemerge gcc like the news item says?

I did transition to 17.1 profile several week ago and performed all of the steps, including re-emerging of the tool chain (gcc included). I thought the issue was my system at first, but this is the only multilib package that has had any issues with the transition since then. The previous stable version,x11-libs/libXt-1.1.5-r1 is able to emerge without issues.

Have you been using crossdev in the past? Do you have multilib-gcc-wrappers package installed?

Ah, this may be something. I have used crossdev in the distant past and still have sys-devel/crossdev installed, in fact. I don't have multilib-gcc-wrappers installed currently though.

If you used it for i686-, then it left garbage on your system. Probably the easiest solution would be to install multilib-gcc-wrappers and resolve collisions by removing the colliding files (i.e. replacing files created by crossdev with those installed by multilib-gcc-wrappers).
Comment 8 Richard Cox 2019-07-03 18:27:35 UTC
That resolved the issue! Thank you Michał and Matt for the help. I don't think I would have figured that out on my own.

Yeah, it would probably be good to find a good long-term solution for this. One option would be to start requiring multilib-gcc-wrappers via multilib eclasses. Any opinion on this?

Not sure if you were asking me (as I'm just a user), but I think if it can be fixed it should be. Not sure how often this problem occurs to other users, but I would likely have never realized what the problem is or the fix.

Technically speaking, it's not really a fix but depending on settings, it either kills the problem as a side effect or makes it more explicit by failing to install with file collisions.

Seems reasonable to me.

(I don't think there's anything for x11@ to do, so reassinging to multilib@)

Thinking about it, it's not going to solve the problem. The breakage is still going to occur if crossdev is run after installing multilib-gcc-wrapper.
