Stable Apache2 seems to rely on gdbm 1.8.3 (~masked). When I emerged apache and gdbm apache would complain of missing  libgdbm.so.3 on startup and fail. I then emerge 1.8.3 and all is well again.

sounds like your libraries are inconsistant, please use revdep-rebuild to correct.
