last emerge sync and reboot left my system only booting into single mode
/etc/init.d/checkfs was unable to map traditional /etc/fstab entrys (/dev/hdxDDD) 
to existing nodes

solution: 
/sbin/devfsd /dev

in start section of etc/init.d/checkroot
