This patch enables monitor mode, and is applied to pcmcia-cs, however, it is not applied to 2.6 kernels.  Oversight?  (There are 2 different patches as well, one for 2.6-2.6.8.1 and one for 2.6.9

Instead of patching the kernel I suggest we introduce net-wireless/orinoco (ebuild skeleton already attached to bug #32737: attachment #30030 [details]).
