Was bitten by bug #604968 / #639156 and can confirm that the committed patches in 2.2.4 fix the issue.

Since current stable mirrorselect-2.2.3 does not work at all here with ANY https host in the selection list, I recommend speedy stabilization.

I gather OpenSSL got more strict verifying the certificates and mirrorselect used to pass it incomplete / wrong data (IP address instead of hostname).
