Description Stefan Schweizer (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-18 09:53:44 UTC
Hi,

I see vmware any any update 84 on the mirrors, w/o a changelog entry, but it fixes the compile problem on the few last kernels.

I also want to propose to change the default of vmware-config.pl for gcc version >2.95 accept to yes to make non-interactive recompiling of module with "vmware-config-pl d c" possible.

Try version 4.5.2.8848-r2 and see if this fixes your problem.

Also, I am holding off on changing the default behavior for now. Perhaps a second bug would be in order. Stacking multiple bugs under one bug # is bad juju.

why did you hold off the change? why do I have to open a seperate bug?

Now I think: If you would like to make the change, you would have done it now. Because you did not its not even worth a new bugreport, right?

Here's the deal... it is a serious pain in the ass to track problems when people stack multiple problems in a single bug.

How do you know when it is resolved? What if part is resolved and the other isn't? When do you mark the bug resolved? How do you track what needs to be done and what doesn't easily?

As for the GCC version change, I really don't have any intention on commiting it simply because it is not a necessary change, it is a convenience change, and things like that are feature requests which should be pushed upstream to the authors rather than giving us one more thing to maintain.

This is my basic take on vmware for Gentoo...

If it isn't a requirement for proper support with other parts of the tree that we support, then I think it is up to the upstream authors to decide. After all, we are supposed to leave things as close to what the upstream authors wrote as possible. Who am I to make the call that the default (notice, changing a default) answer should be yes?
