How would the logo be used by baselayout? Because unless there's some part of baselayout that could actually make use of it, I fail to see why baselayout should install it. The main request is adding a LOGO into /etc/os-release. Then the question becomes what actually installs that icon (keeping in mind only one package can do so for default fallback hicolor theme), and baselayout itself would be the most logical choice, kind of, as it is what references it. Alternative suggestions welcome, but lets try to not have too many colors to choose from for this bikeshed. Spec for this: https://www.freedesktop.org/software/systemd/man/os-release.html What about x11-themes/gentoo-artwork? Doesn't it package what you need already? Doesn't it package what you need > already? Not from what I can see in the package contents. It installs some wallpapers and a "gentoo" icon theme, but not anything usable as a logo in os-release. If I missed something, please point it out. This was raised years ago on dev, and specifically asked for it to be in a DIFFERENT package than baselayout, so that derivative distributions don't need to fork baselayout. Gentoo-dev list, 2016/Dec/04, "RFC: Proposal for addition of distribution variables" https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/User:Awilfox/GLEP_70 If the logo is graphical, I think it shouldn't be brought in even indirectly from baselayout, and rather should come from another package being installed [on a headless system, there is no need for a graphical logo]. Are you thus also proposing the LOGO entry to be to a generic "distro-icon" sort of icon, instead of gentoo by name? I suppose we could start by splitting os-release into a separate package, and making baselayout RDEP on it. This way, Gentoo forks could trivially override it without forking the whole baselayout. I suppose this package could also include a logo if necessary (conditional to USE flags?)
