When I try to start xmaxima, I get the message:
"Documentation not found in /usr/share/maxima/5.9.0"

and xmaxima fails to start.

I solved it with 
 ln -s /usr/share/doc/maxima-5.9.0-r3/html/  /usr/share/maxima/5.9.0/doc

Which version of Maxima are you using?  Have you tried 5.9.1?

It worked with 5.9.1. Great!
I had 5.9.0 before.

Doesn't work with maxima-5.9.1-r1.

I had no other versions to link it to.
