I'm seeing the exact same issue on an AMD Opteron we're building in 32-bit, but with a 64-bit kernel. Portage 2.0.51-r2 (default-linux/x86/2004.3, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r1, 2.6.9-gentoo-r6 i686) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.9-gentoo-r6 i686 AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 246 Gentoo Base System version 1.4.16 Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r5 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 Binutils: sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.8-r1 Headers: sys-kernel/linux-headers-2.4.21-r1 Libtools: sys-devel/libtool-1.5.2-r5 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /usr/share/texmf/dvipdfm/config/ /usr/share/texmf/dvips/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/generic/config/ /usr/share/texmf/tex/platex/config/ /usr/share/texmf/xdvi/ /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686 -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs autoconfig ccache distlocks sandbox sfperms" GENTOO_MIRRORS="ftp://ftp.ussg.iu.edu/pub/linux/gentoo ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/pub/gentoo http://mirror.clarkson.edu/pub/distributions/gentoo/ http://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://gentoo.seren.com/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j3" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="accessibility aim apache2 apm berkdb bidi bitmap-fonts canna cdr cjk crypt cscope doc dvd emacs encode f77 fftw foomaticdb fortran freewnn gb gd gdbm gif gtkhtml guile icq imagemagick imap imlib jabber java jikes jpeg junit kerberos krb4 ldap leim libg++ libgda libwww mad maildir mbox mcal mikmod mpi msn mule mysql ncurses nls objc odbc oscar oss pam pdflib perl plotutils png python quicktime readline samba spell ssl svga tcpd tetex tiff truetype unicode usb wmf x86 xml xml2 xv yahoo zlib" Performed the upgrade below and am-utils then succeeded.
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies ...done!
[ebuild U ] sys-devel/bin86-0.16.13 [0.16.0]

[ebuild U ] sys-apps/portage-2.0.51-r3 [2.0.51-r2]
*** Portage will stop merging at this point and reload itself,
recalculate dependencies, and complete the merge.
