Yay, figured out the problem. It was the trailing slash change after all: cd "${EROOT}" || die (which started evaluating to 'cd' ;-)) The bug has been referenced in the following commit(s): https://gitweb.gentoo.org/proj/portage.git/commit/?id=53c4e1ac66f9ccfcb68b800cc1489a5da9923bb8 commit 53c4e1ac66f9ccfcb68b800cc1489a5da9923bb8 Author: Michał Górny <mgorny@gentoo.org> AuthorDate: 2018-10-25 14:22:54 +0000 Commit: Michał Górny <mgorny@gentoo.org> CommitDate: 2018-10-25 15:16:44 +0000 *-qa-check.d: fix entering EROOT in EAPI 7 Fix running QA checks from EROOT in EAPI 7 if the value is empty. Previously, this wrongly caused 'cd' to be run with empty value implying home directory.
