Description aethyr 2004-10-06 00:13:04 UTC
I'm not sure if this is a GNOME error, or a packaging error, so I'm filing here, feel free to move upstream if necessary.

Basically, with GNOME 2.8, file-roller doesn't open files when I double click them, instead it produces an error:

Couldn't display "/path/to/file.zip"
There was an error launching the application.

where /path/to/file.zip is the path to any zip file that I choose. It can also be a .tar.gz or a .tar.bz2 file.

However, if I right-click on the file, and choose "Open with Other Application", and then type in file-roller and hit ENTER, the file will open as expected.

Additionally, when I then right click on the file, I have two options. A "file-roller" up top, seperated by a bar from a "file-roller" below it. This top file-roller still doesn't work, however, if I click on the "file-roller" below it, the file will open. Double clicking still doesn't work.

Finally, if I right click and go into properties -> open with and change the selection from the top "file-roller" to the "file-roller" below it, then everything works as expected by default (i.e. I can double click on a file, and it works).

As I'm writing this, I just noticed one last thing. While still in the "Open With" menu, if I remove the second entry, and then remove the first "file-roller" entry, it changes to something called "Archive Manager". Things work with this "Archive Manager" entry as expected.

This is with gnome-vfs 2.8.1, nautilus 2.8.0, and shared-mime-info 0.15.

hmm, I have never had this issue/can't reproduce. Is it file roller that produces the error window, or is it just a general error window? Using the latest desktop-file-utils package?

artchive manager is the correct one to use. Have you been adding your own file handlers over time? I bet something old/non-default is interfering.

No traffic, and appears a local error. Reopen if still a problem.
