Without lsb-release installed VMWare ESXi shows annoying warnings like 

> The configured guest OS (Other Linux (64-bit)) for this virtual machine does not match the guest that is currently running (Linux 4.9.95-gentoo Gentoo Base System release 2.4.1). You should specify the correct guest OS to allow for guest-specific optimizations.

As well this may prevent user from choosing some valid hardware options, like VMXNET adapter

Is lsb-release needed when *building* open-vm-tools, or when vmtoolsd is *running*?
