Doing a fresh install on a DPW500au miata platform for Gentoo Linux. Trying a stage1 installation. All goes according to the installation instructions until I
try the bootstrap step.

Looks like you don't have a portage tree yet. You should install a portage snapshot or run 'emerge sync' and try bootstrapping again.
