If you want this fixed please add a new bug upstream at https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/ Thanks! Lets see how upstream decides. I personally do not see this as a bug. Although configure.ac is preferred configure.in is not deprecated. It is still mentioned as a valid name in the documentation [1] [2].
