Comment 1 Andreas Eriksson 2004-09-15 07:45:47 UTC
I can confirm this, 2.8 is released.
Comment 2 Peter Johanson (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-15 08:13:53 UTC
And i can tell you, our gnome folks are probably pretty aware of it to.
Comment 3 bugs 2004-09-17 15:53:46 UTC
Sooo, not to be a-naggin' but with half-a-dozen distros announcing 2.8 builds, how come there's no ebuild in this bug?
I'm more than willing to start testing.
Are significant modifications needed to make a 2.6.3 ebuild work?
Comment 4 Benoit C 2004-09-19 03:28:33 UTC
can't test it, seem I can't unmask packages.
Comment 5 Andreas Kotowicz 2004-09-19 03:33:00 UTC
just remove /usr/portage/profile/package.mask file and retry.
Comment 6 Joe McCann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-19 04:04:34 UTC
this bug is useless enough, it doesn't need to become a support forum for people who aren't firmiliar with anything(thats what forums.gentoo.org is for).

@comment3, gnome desktop and libs make up several dozen ebuilds, not one. It takes much more work then bumping a 2.6.3 ebuild. If you need to install it right now, I hear there are half a dozen distros that offer packages(keep yer pants on)

@comment 4 man portage and read about the /etc/portage dir(or please wait until things are put into ~arch).

@comment 5 don't offer a solution to the problem if you don't understand it. Removing package.mask is not at all the correct thing to do. Also man portage.

@any future comments: the gnome team is very much aware of a 2.8 release(and any other gnome releated releases for that matter), and foser is working on the ebuilds now, adding them into the tree as quick as he can. There should be no need to comment on this bug. Hopefully the only other comment in this bug will be when 2.8 is added into ~arch and this is closed.
Comment 7 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-19 06:08:27 UTC
Gnome 2.8 is now almost completely available in p.mask. From here theres a few hurdles to take before it can be moved out of there. List below...

* general testing (duh)

* all non x86 arches in meta (and probably some others) probably need to add keywords to certain new components (most new components are in a RDEP section after the large 'old' list in the gnome-base/gnome-2.8.0_prex ebuild)

When this takes too long, those arches will be removed from meta (gnome-base/gnome) when it is removed from p.mask to minimize the overall stress. But most likely there will still be discrepancies in the tree (although most users wont notice them), this is a situation we'd of course like to avoid.

* Add virtual/fam and dep on it to easy the move to gamin. app-admin/fam will stay first choice for now. Someone needs to do the works ;)

* fix gnome-vfs/howl

* add a newer release of hal, either official release or cvs snapshot.

* ... probably something i can't think of right now

CC arches currently in meta + devs who poked me about gnome 2.8 (yeah you know who you are)
Comment 8 bugs 2004-09-19 07:11:49 UTC
Thanks Joe. Yes, I'm aware there's more than one ebuild.
bumping *all* of 'em up. Better? :)

Buuuut, no rush. Was just wondering what the status was - and foser provided that nicely.
Comment 9 Benoit C 2004-09-21 06:57:36 UTC
@comment #6, I know how to unmask packages thx, don't be so obvious... What I don't understand is why there isn't yet any gnome-2.8_pre1 in /usr/portage/profile/packages.mask . I did today after a new sync

grep 'gnome' /usr/portage/profiles/package.mask

and no masked packages. The same for evolution-2.0 btw
Comment 10 Benoit C 2004-09-21 07:01:18 UTC
hum ok, just realized that all packages up to 2.7 was masked. My fault...
Comment 11 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-21 07:17:19 UTC
This has gone on long enough! Please, this is no forum, 80% of the comments made add nothing relevant to the bug, while probably a few dozen devs are CC-ed on it receiving pointless, distracting traffic. Keep quiet if you got nothing useful to add.

That being said, whats the status for the arches adding the new packages ? I know it's all a bit shortterm, but the few remaining issues are relatively minor and I'd like to get gnome 2.8 out of p.mask.

Comment 12 Ciaran McCreesh 2004-09-21 07:23:02 UTC
Have you got a complete list of which packages need keywords added for each arch, and what USE flags to mask for each if they don't work?
Comment 13 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-21 07:34:56 UTC
I don't have a full list, but the following list should probably cover most of it:

dev-util/desktop-file-utils
net-misc/vino
gnome-extra/gal-2.2*
gnome-extra/evolution-data-server
mail-client/evolution-2*
gnome-extra/evolution-webcal
app-admin/gnome-system-tools
net-analyzer/gnome-nettool

deps going to be under 'hal' USE flag (non default) :

gnome-base/gnome-volume-manager (not USE flagged yet in meta)
sys-apps/hal
sys-apps/dbus

deps going to be under 'howl' USE flag :
net-misc/howl (in gnome-vfs)

not yet in portage :
gnome-extra/gnome-games-extra-data

the last one is just data files, nothing arch specific to consider so I might as well use the KEYWORDS from gnome-games from which it got split out.
Comment 14 Travis Tilley (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-21 19:37:09 UTC
all the necessary ebuilds should be keyworded on amd64.
Comment 15 Pieter Van den Abeele (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-22 15:51:14 UTC
PPC will have a look at everything asap. Have you got a list of ppc specific things that need looking at?
Comment 16 Gustavo Zacarias (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-22 18:24:49 UTC
Sparc will look at it once the hal USE flag is around so we can mask it, otherwise it would involve some ebuild tweaking.
Comment 17 Luca Barbato gentoo-dev 2004-09-23 07:54:46 UTC
PPC is ok since 2 days ago, testing locally here, dbus/hal seems to need kernel -2.6.8.x
Comment 18 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-23 08:08:34 UTC
hal USE flag has been added to the meta ebuild
Comment 19 Joe McCann (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-26 19:50:45 UTC
*** Bug 65477 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
Comment 20 Stephen Becker (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-28 09:56:20 UTC
I'm attempting to build the new deps on mips right now. I'm not sure what to expect as I never even have tested older versions of some of this stuff beforehand.
Comment 21 Surakshan Mendis 2004-09-28 23:56:46 UTC
I'm on x86, installed the hardmasked gnome (with udev, kernel 2.6.7).
gal won't compile, econf bails out, my solution was to emerge the new kernel headers, then redo glibc, aftwards gal worked...

just pointing this as I'm not sure how it will effect gnome users in the mainstream
Comment 22 Benoit C 2004-09-29 00:15:26 UTC
ok on x86.

- Same problem with gal. I had previousliy installed linux-headers but it was marked as block when emerging gnome. So I remoded it. But after removed it linux26-headers wasn't emerged before gal. I have to emerge them first and then everything was ok.

- provlem with evolution 2: it doesn't replace evolution-1.4.6, dunno why. So /usr/bin/evolution refers to evolution-1.4 and not evolution-2 .

- problem with gnome-themes-manager : it doesn't display themes
Comment 23 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-29 00:43:12 UTC
this is a tracker, problems should go seperated in bugs blocking this one & please be more verbose about them than you are now, we can't do anything with these generic descriptions.
Comment 24 Gustavo Zacarias (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-30 12:27:57 UTC
sparc is looking good, keyworded everything needed ~sparc, except hal which i masked for obvious reasons.
No showstopper bugs so far, everything works like a charm.
Comment 25 Stephen Becker (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-30 12:40:50 UTC
Ok, mips should be all good for the unmasking now.
Comment 26 Guy Martin (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-04 02:42:11 UTC
hppa should have everything ~keyworded.
hal has been use.mask'ed since it was not tested yet.
Comment 27 Matthias Jell 2004-10-07 12:10:28 UTC
i compile gnome 2.8 on my system yesterday. i can't start the gnome-system-monitor because the program can't load the libgtop libary. A recompile of libgtop don't work. Also the gnome system is very slow now.
Comment 28 Gene Ruebsamen 2004-10-08 12:47:26 UTC
Could this be a duplicate of bug 60945??
Comment 29 Gene Ruebsamen 2004-10-08 12:49:16 UTC
Sorry, ignore my last comment.
Comment 30 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-08 16:32:55 UTC
We can't wait forever, altough all goals have not been met i've moved gnome 2.8 to ~arch.

alpha removed from final keywords mask

hppa : check evolution related deps, i left 2.0.1 in p,mask because of some bugs that need sorting & 2.0.0 didn't get keyworded

thnks everyone for helping out

We take the remaining issues to a new bug which will be created soon
Comment 31 Todor Zviskov 2004-10-08 17:38:58 UTC
It's unmasked but there is a small problem in package.mask. Line 219 reads:

gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-1.0.1

and it should be:

>=gnome-extra/evolution-data-server-1.0.1
Comment 32 Priit Laes (IRC: plaes) 2004-10-08 21:33:00 UTC
gnome-extra/gnome-games is still missing for gnome-2.8
Comment 33 foser (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-10-09 05:20:44 UTC
@32 : yeah, you think I really didn't know that ?
