That is correct, but it requires a patch to dev-lang/R itself. I've taken an axe to it, but I have no idea what happens if you have X11 but built x11-libs/cairo -X. https://github.com/adjust/gentoo-overlay/tree/master/dev-lang/R Perhaps I should just patch up the ebuild to avoid that undefined state.
