can be fixed in place as it's a dep only issue.

Can you clarify what you mean? asciidoc and xmlto are already in DEPEND, they are not needed in runtime.
awesome distributes only source *.txt files for manpages and needs asciidoc & xmlto to make actual manpages from them during build, so we can't make this optional.
