build.log too big to be attached, find it here instead: https://www.frostsnow.net/files/build.log Please compress the build log using gzip, bzip2, or xz and attach it. Created attachment 495478 [details]
build log
...that idea seems so obvious in retrospect.
Is it possible you ran out of memory here? (check dmesg) I'm not seeing anything in /var/log/messages (the machine has been rebooted, so it won't be in regular dmesg). It's also not a "Killed" message like I've sometimes gotten when I forget to enable swap on my other low-memory machines, and the error occurs consistently with the Python traceback, unlike the OOM-killer, which strikes pseudo-randomly and usually kills GCC. FWIW, the machine has 4GB RAM without swap. Unlike other occurrences of this error, I'm not seeing any root error being reported, just the python error saying there was a problem. An OOM issue could definitely trigger that so maybe that's it. After it fails, please see if it'll finish by running: ebuild /usr/portage/www-client/firefox/firefox-52.3.0.ebuild install , and you can check dmesg, the filesystem, etc. etc. if it errors out. Install failure
Definitely not an OOM problem as there's nothing in dmesg. I also added a 4GB swap file for good measure, but to no avail.
Correct me I am wrong, but you do try to compile on armv7a with hardfloat and hardened profile, right? In this case, and if it is not a lack of memory as a reason for this build failure, you might want to try to hand over --disable-startupcache via /etc/portage/env/ , drop a textfile named firefox with EXTRA_ECONF="--disable-startupcache" into env/www-client if you don't know how to do that. I found this hint in the arm overlay, which is outdated and focusses a lot on patches and fixes for softfloat, but it might be worth a try? There is also a tiny patch available (https://github.com/gentoo/arm/blob/master/www-client/firefox/files/firefox-52.0.1-disable_cachegen.patch) but I think that this simply makes --disable-startupcache the default value instead of enabling it during src_configure. Auuugh, I thought that I had previously added '--disable-startupcache' but I left out the second 'E' in 'EXTRA_ECONF', thinking it was just 'EXTRA_CONF'. It worked for me when I added that. FF segfault via 'script' and 'gdb'
I might have spoken too soon; although Firefox was installed and merged correctly, the program simply segfaults. This attachment should contain output of a gdb session capture via 'script' (currently posting via Lynx); the issue *appears* to be in 'libxul.so'. I'll see about getting a meaningful backtrace when able.

backtrace + gdb
This is the backtrace that I'm getting. The problem appears to be from the Google protobuf code, found in 'firefox-52.4.0esr/toolkit/components/protobuf/src/google/protobuf/stubs/once.cc'. I couldn't figure out gdb well enough to get the 'status' variable, but I'm guessing that the protobuf hasn't been initalized and isn't set and it's trying to call the 'run' function (note how the final frame has an address 0xffff0fc0, suggesting to me that Closure* is NULL and 'run' is offset by about f000).
Created bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1412169 . Also, note that, since opening this bug, the ebuild has moved to 52.4.0 (should I update the title?) and I enabled the 'eme-free' flag accordingly. (In reply to Wade Cline from comment #12) > Created bug https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1412169 . Also, > note that, since opening this bug, the ebuild has moved to 52.4.0 (should I > update the title?) and I enabled the 'eme-free' flag accordingly. updating the bug info will not change the fact we do not have anyone in the Mozilla team that has a fully working arms machine to help debug the issue at the moment. I will try and find time to update my chrome book and test. (In reply to Jory A. Pratt from comment #13) > updating the bug info will not change the fact we do not have anyone in the > Mozilla team that has a fully working arms machine to help debug the issue > at the moment. I will try and find time to update my chrome book and test. I see. I opened a bug with Mozilla in case they happen to know something about it or are able to provide ideas or hopefully patches.
