Appears to be related to change in tcp_window_scaling behaviour between 2.6.7 and 2.6.8 Setting /proc/net/ipv4/tcp_window_scaling to 0 resolves the issue. Setting tcp_window_scaling to "0" does NOT fix the problem for me. I am running KDE 3.3.0 with 2.6.7-r13 at the moment. This problem first appeared last night, and I was running 2.6.7-r11 then. I hoped an update to 2.6.7-r13 would help, but I was wrong. I am reluctant to update to 2.6.8 at the moment for other reasons. Checking mail or web browsing takes 30-60 seconds to complete (for each page) when they used to be instantaneous. Mozilla Firefox exhibits the same problem. Portage 2.0.50-r10 (default-x86-2004.0, gcc-3.3.4, glibc-2.3.4.20040808-r0, 2.6.7-gentoo-r13) ================================================================= System uname: 2.6.7-gentoo-r13 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Gentoo Base System version 1.5.3 distcc 2.14 i686-pc-linux-gnu (protocols 1 and 2) (default port 3632) [enabled] ccache version 2.3 [enabled] Autoconf: sys-devel/autoconf-2.59-r4 Automake: sys-devel/automake-1.8.5-r1 ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="x86 ~x86" AUTOCLEAN="yes" CFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -mcpu=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" CHOST="i686-pc-linux-gnu" COMPILER="" CONFIG_PROTECT="/etc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xkb /usr/kde/2/share/config /usr/kde/3.2/share/config /usr/kde/3.3/share/config:/usr/kde/3.3/env:/usr/kde/3.3/shutdown /usr/kde/3/share/config /usr/share/config /var/qmail/control" CONFIG_PROTECT_MASK="/etc/gconf /etc/terminfo /etc/env.d" CXXFLAGS="-march=pentium4 -mcpu=pentium4 -O3 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer" DISTDIR="/usr/portage/distfiles" FEATURES="autoaddcvs ccache distcc sandbox" GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.mirrors.pair.com/ ftp://mirrors.tds.net/gentoo http://mirror.datapipe.net/gentoo" MAKEOPTS="-j5" PKGDIR="/usr/portage/packages" PORTAGE_TMPDIR="/var/tmp" PORTDIR="/usr/portage" PORTDIR_OVERLAY="" SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage" USE="X aac acpi alsa apache2 arts audiofile avi berkdb cdr crypt cups divx4linux dvd dvdr encode f77 flac foomaticdb gdbm gif gpm imagemagick imap imlib innodb jpeg kde libg++ libwww live mad maildir mikmod mmx mpeg mysql ncurses nls nptl oggvorbis opengl pam pdflib perl png python qt quicktime readline samba scanner sdl speex sse ssl tcpd theora tiff truetypeunicode usb vhosts x86 xml2 xvid zlib" Also FWIW, I can browse sites in lynx without problems (the 30-60 second delay) that I see in Konqueror or Mozilla. Mozilla Firefox is fine. I spoke too soon. For more details on my troubleshooting session last night, read this thread: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=1486922#1486070 According to http://lwn.net/Articles/92727/, the bug isn't in the kernel, it's down to broken routers on the internet. Setting the default window scale factor is the recommended solution for the time being. Thanks to Gustavo Barron for pointing out the above article. |
