Can confirm this bug and temporary fix as noted. USE=-opencv also a viable workaround given how opencv-3.1.0-r7 no longer builds with vtk-7.1.0 (see https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=607830) Build failures occur with media-libs/openimageio-1.8.13 as well on my AMD Ryzen system. Removing the opencv USE flag resolves build failures; although, I'm not sure if the same problem is resolved or if it's yet another opencv-related issue within openimageio.
