So the problem here is just that the installcd's kernel config isn't usable for you without some configuration. I'm not sure that in itself is a bug, but it does sound like having EFI_STUB in the ia64 installcd's kernel config would take care of half of your reported problem. I don't think the boot parameters can be set in a way that's suitable for everyone, so you'd still need to hand configure that. I am having problems booting stage3 compiled ia64 kernels on my AH232A integrity blade [HP bl870c]. I can boot with the following media: SuSE IA64 v11 sp4 Gentoo install-minimal-10-23-2014 Gentoo install-minimal-4-17-2016 I cannot boot with the following: FreeBSD-10.9-current Gentoo install-minimal-1-10-2017 Gentoo install-minimal-2-16-2017 Currently booting the install-minimal-4-17-2016-CD, I am working off of a chroot stage3-021717 with kernel-4.1.5-gentoo-r1. The blade has EFI64 with a EFI boot loader as well as EFIShell. Emerging sys-kernel/gentoo-sources:(4.1.5-r1)(4.4.3)(4.9.3) attempts to compile kernel with --oldconfig and using configs from/etc/kernels all fail boot. Attempts boot directly from /EFI/gentoo/bootia64.efi fail. Using the elilo.efi EFI stub appears to be EFI executable. Envoking elilo will not recongize the kernel specified in /etc/elilo.conf. './elilo --efiboot' causes Warnings! <kernel>- not found!. Manual entries to /EFI/gentoo/elilo.conf after elilo installs will boot stub but does not load kernel. Going over the ia64-kernel-config noticed that there are no internal kernel-boot parameters and that there is no kernel EFI stub. Everything elsewise EFI in kernel-config is selected. The recent install-minimalCDs won't boot at all. Hoping the arch isn't abandoned, regression sucks. Hope you keep it gentoo. This beast is quad ia64 going for some -Os joy. Posting my emerge-info.
