Though JPilot 0.97.7 has been out since Feb. according to jpilot.org, it isn't in portage.  Even if I use ~x86, it says the newest version is 0.97.6-r1.

may be a duplicate or may be relevant, but I didn't really understand it so I'm not sure.

you need to re-sync your portage tree, run:

emerge sync

check http://packages.gentoo.org/ to verify that we do have the latest version in portage.

It's there now under ~x86, but I'm quite sure it wasn't before, and I used emerge sync.  Oh well.
