4.9.x has this bug [1] which won't booting on nvidia optimus systems with nouveau driver and runtime power mamangement enabled. The expected fix landed in 4.10 recently and hopefully will appear in 4.9 as well (I hope). The problem is that xorg will freeze on boot. [1]: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=98690 Should I file a new bug report here on bugs.gentoo.org about the issue? Is it possible to backport the fix? The whole change is to add only add 1s delay. [1] The possible solution is to disable runpm and use some other stuff like bbswitch to disable discrete gpu (which I didn't try yet). The other way is to migrate to nvidia drivers and/or use bumblebee (which won't work with nouveau as I know). https://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/?id=68f458eec7069d618a6c884ca007426e0cea411b Does the patch apply to 4.9 cleanly and fix the issue? And yes, this should be another bug and I should stop spamming this stable bug also. https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=602844 - probably this bug should also be fixed before stabilizing the kernel. 340.x is the latest branch for a lot of legacy GPUs. Stable on alpha. Out of kernel drivers never hold up kernel stabilization. There is also bug #602458, even though it has been marked as RESOLVED WONTFIX by the reporter. There is a patch to solve it in https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=177741 and I can confirm that it works. please don't write in the stabilization ticket, instead open another bug. please continue with the stabilization of this kernel amd64 stable Stable for HPPA.
