Why not make Gentoo support one of those things: http://www.freedesktop.org/Standards/config-spec
I think this will make Gentoo not only easier to use, but THE solution to just about everything!
Plus, its just cool. Gentoo IS kinda cutting edge and all, no?

Yep, this is cool stuff.
However, its not really a "Gentoo" thing, we package and distribute
software. It is intended for the desktop projects (KDE Gnome) to
support this spec, and we then distribute that software to you.
The basis of this, D-Bus, is already available in Portage (masked for testing).

I look forward to seeing upstream developers support this spec, and ultimately
have these features integrated into Gentoo.
