Hello,
I've noticed there is new version of cups-pdf at http://cip.physik.uni-wuerzburg.de/~vrbehr/cups-pdf/
This new version brings improved pdf output quality, and security improvements.
I have tried updating ebuild from 1.3.1. The diff is attached. I've lowered logging level. 
This new cups-pdf uses su command to call ghostscript. So, I changed default user from nobody to lp. This works for me when I provide lp user with a shell (/bin/bash) in /etc/passwd. I'm aware this is probably a security issue so I'm waiting to see how gentoo developers would solve this.
