Description Karl Trygve Kalleberg (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-08-10 07:00:12 UTC
Compiling media-sound/sox-12.17.4-r2 with the use flags +alsa -encode +mad
+oggvorbis -oss, results in a sox installation that cannot play audio to the
sound device.

The /usr/bin/play script is hardcoded to use the ossdsp output for /dev/dsp
when on Linux and FreeBSD, resulting in:

sox: Unknown output file format for '/dev/dsp': File type 'ossdsp' is not known

I suggest we either issue a warning at installation time (say in
pkg_postinst) telling the user that sox cannot work properly on alsa-only
systems, or the problem itself should be remedied.

Apparently, there's no alsadsp output compiled in either, and I have been
unable to figure out exactly how this can fixed, yet.

Same here of course ;-)

I think the best (at least for now) will be 'ewarn'ing a user after installation comlites...

can you please try 12.17.5
Comment 3 Doug Goldstein (RETIRED) gentoo-dev 2004-09-11 10:01:03 UTC
marking this as DUP because the other bug has useful comments from an ALSA dev about the known situation.
