You can help the maintainer with further information:
Does a simple bump [1] work on your system? 
Chances are high, because a first look on the bump revealed only small changes.

Sorry, yes, I should have said this in my original bug request as I bumped locally at that time (I regularly bump and test new releases of dev-lang/R, e.g. https://bugs.gentoo.org/632364).

Its worked fine for a year on ~amd64 for me on several machines (all very siilar USE flags).

Ironically version 17.11 was released a month after the last activity.

I've created a new #639752 and will close this one.
